Making Sacred Space for Wesak by Honoring Divine
Preparing for a ceremony like our journey meditation to the Wesak Valley can make profound shifts in your daily experience. Yet, making sacred space is quite simple. Begin your day by acknowledging the Divine in everyone and everything and continue throughout the day. The practice can be as simple as saying, “Namaste,” with a slight bow of your head and your hands in the prayer position. Namaste can be translated to, “I bow to the Divine in you.” The acknowledgement and honoring of the Divine in all of creation is extremely powerful. But, it can also be fun. Some days I acknowledge Divine by listening to the Billy Jonas song, God Is In, over and over. Billy’s humor and joy in celebrating Divine never fails to make me smile.
Another enjoyable way to practice honoring Divine is ramping up your acknowledgement of the blessings in your life by writing in your Gratitude Journal throughout the day. Please remember that the most effective Gratitude Practice is when you express gratitude for everyone and everything, with no judgment on its value.
Another sacred way of connecting to Divine is through prayer. I personally love to take tobacco and pray into it – sometimes as prayer ties, sometimes as an offering left with my friend the River Birch, with her permission, sometimes smoked in my Ossinagon Bowl. Following the Holy Ancestors in this way of praying always brings comfort and appreciation for the Earth Walk to me.
Some other ways to make your home sacred for your Wesak journey is doing household chores and dedicating that service to Divine. You might couple this with gratitude for the many blessings your home contains, that you might ordinarily take for granted.
You can cut flowers from your garden in gratitude, arrange them with the intention of honoring Divine, and place them around your home. You also can smudge or burn incense, light candles, sprinkle Holy Water, spray rooms with water and essential oils. I usually feed my altars, combining many of these offerings.
You can create a feast in celebration of Divine, chanting or listening to sacred music and praying over the food while you prepare it.
Finally, I almost always put aside some “me” time so that I can take a cleansing bath. This is a time when I put away the cares of the day and have just relax and allow in a tub of hot water with salt and essential oils. I often burn candles and incense in the bathroom when I do this bath ritual.
Making sacred space is simple, yet profound. Acknowledging Divine in everyone and everything in gratitude puts you directly in the flow of Source Energy, and isn’t that one of the reasons why you are on the spiritual path?
