Television Finally Is Dealing with
Reinventing Identity – Highly
Recommend Second Act on RLTV
Sunday has always been my day of joy. In the morning, I’m an avid follower of Super Soul Sunday on OWN and tweet with Oprah and her followers on hashtag #SuperSoulSunday at 11:00 a.m. ET. I rarely miss this show, as the connections I make and strengthen uplift and energize me.
So, I was so excited, when I was surfing the tv, to find out that Paul DiMeo has a program, Second Act, on RLTV, a cable television station that was created to connect with people over 50 years of age. I fell in love with Paul’s gentle, helping spirit when he was on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. I always wanted to find out what he was up to, and his new program hits it out of the ballpark. In Second Act, he helps people reinvent their business identities and successfully create second careers.
Think of this. What happens if your company goes under, if you get laid off without any notice, if your company asks you to retire early and you aren’t prepared? Do you stay in anger and depression, or do you reinvent yourself and start a second career? I’m so glad that RLTV is encouraging people to let go of their angst, deal with the ups and downs of the reinvention process, and helping them create new businesses. Wow! That is what I write about on Transcendent Journey; it’s the work I do in my counseling practice. What serendipity!!!
Why Is Reinventing Yourself So Challenging?
One of the ways we sabotage changing careers, relationships, and so on is that we get stuck in an identity. We have many viewpoints that keep this identity in place. For example, Paul worked with a lady who lost her theater and wanted a second chance. She believed she wasn’t good at asking for donations and help. Instead of letting her stay stuck in that view, which was preventing her from raising funds for her Second Act, Paul found a speech coach for her. We saw the coach giving advice; the lady rehearsing her approach to donors. The more this lady rehearsed, the less fear she felt. The less fear, the looser that “I can’t ask for money” viewpoint held. What a great example of changing a self-defeating behavior for a more successful one.
